An inner-spring mattress can be quite heavy, particularly if it is queen-sized or king-sized. To properly care for a mattress, it should be flipped every three of four months. Some people would find that process difficult or a burden. For them, the new "flipless" inner-spring mattresses might be appealing. These mattresses have a top and a bottom, and cannot be flipped. It is recommended that they be rotated (the head of the mattress moved to the foot of the bed), which requires less effort than flipping. However, if you have the strength to flip a mattress, we recommend you stick with the standard two-sided mattress. You might end up staining or soiling your mattress with something that cannot be fully cleaned, and you'd be happy to have a second side to your mattress.
Adjustable Beds/Mattresses
These are modeled after the mattresses and beds used in hospitals: a control pad raises or lowers various parts of the bed. This can facilitate sitting up in bed, raising one's legs. This not only requires a mechanized frame, but also a matching mattress. Most mattresses are not designed to be folded and bent in the ways these beds require.
Stain Resistance
Some mattresses are more stain resistant than others. Some manufacturers may also offer stain resistant overlays or special sealants that can be applied to the mattress. This may be important for shoppers who have issues with incontinence or night-sweats.
